Issaquah Kitchen Cabinet Painting & Refinish
Natural Wood Kitchen Cabinet Repainting and Modernization
On this project the owners had lived in this home for more than 20 years, and the kitchen still had its original natural wood cabinetry. The cabinets had held up well, but the homeowners were ready for a cleaner, more modern appearance without replacing otherwise functional cabinetry. This is a typical kitchen cabinet repaint that we are often contracted to execute.
The goal was to transform the existing stained and clear-coated wood cabinets into a durable painted finish. We selected a custom off-white cabinet color and coordinated the transformation with repainting the kitchen walls.

Preparing Natural Wood Cabinets for a Painted Finish
Painting previously stained and clear-coated wood cabinets requires significantly more preparation than repainting cabinets that have a previous painting or opaque finish; failing lacquer or conversion varnish is another issue. From our experience with 30+ years of painting and refinishing cabinets ; an existing clear finish creates a hard, nonporous surface that must be properly prepared before primer and finish coatings are applied.

Our Cabinet Preparation Process
Surface cleaning and profiling to prepare the existing finish for proper coating adhesion.
Sanding the existing clear coat to remove gloss and create a suitable surface for primer.
Filling damaged and inconsistent areas in the wood to create a more uniform painted surface.
Applying a full oil-based primer coat to provide adhesion and isolate the original stained wood from the new finish.
Applying a durable cabinet-grade finish coating designed for the repeated handling, cleaning, and wear associated with kitchen cabinetry.

Why Proper Cabinet Preparation Matters
The durability of a painted cabinet finish depends heavily on what happens before the final coat is applied.
Natural wood cabinetry that has been stained and clear-coated cannot simply be painted over. The existing finish must be cleaned, sanded, repaired, and properly primed so that the new coating system bonds to the substrate.
This preparation also gives us the opportunity to correct years of minor wear, dents, surface inconsistencies, and other imperfections before applying the new painted finish.

Updating a 20-Year-Old Kitchen Without Replacing the Cabinets
One of the advantages of professionally refinishing existing cabinetry is that homeowners can dramatically change the appearance of a kitchen while retaining well-built cabinets that are still performing properly.
In this project, the transition from natural stained wood to a custom off-white painted finish, combined with freshly painted walls, gave the kitchen a substantially lighter and more contemporary appearance while preserving the existing cabinetry.
The result is not simply a color change. It is a complete coating-system conversion—from previously stained and clear-coated natural wood to a professionally prepared, primed, and painted cabinet finish designed for long-term use.
